I’ve stood at the head of an operating table and watched as a surgeon lifted a child’s damaged heart out of his body. I’ve slept (uneasily) in a roomful of snoring city firefighters.

In my reporting, I’ve dug through moldy boxes of trial evidence, deciphered scientific data (or found the right person to explain it to me), scoured the Internet for background material and traipsed through all sorts of libraries. I’ve interviewed chief executives, steel workers, treasure hunters, college students, cubicle dwellers, craftspeople, doctors, bankers, farmers, historians, social workers, entrepreneurs, politicians, actors, researchers, lawyers, skeptics and crusaders.
